Super Sprint video game sequel NeoSprint coming to consoles

Last Updated on April 24, 2024

NeoSprint is a new take on the top-down classic multiplayer video game Super Sprint, and is coming soon from Atari.

Top-down racing never got better than the Super Sprint video game, often the most popular machine in arcades thanks to its unique three player mode.

Rather than rely on joysticks, Super Sprint gave players a steering wheel to guide their car around a hazardous track, and it was one of the ultimante party game experiences. In fact, it’s something of a mystery why something similar hasn’t appeared on modern systems.

Then again, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (and all its classic tracks) probably has the party driving game market sewn up… or does it?

Atari probably thinks they can make inroads here, as Super Sprint is being revived! The video game has a sequel, NeoSprint, out now on Atari VCS and coming this summer to current gen systems. Here’s what the Atari PR machine is saying:

NeoSprint zooms back to life as a single screen arcade racer for up to 8 players on supporting systems. Paired with a robust track builder and intuitive sharing tools, NeoSprint provides a racing experience that satisfies speed demons and architects alike.

Judging by the video above, NeoSprint retains all of the isometric racing madness while upgrading the graphics. We can, therefore, hope for some classic playability in this new version.

Other top down racing video games like Super Sprint

It’s fair to say that Super Sprint spearheaded a sub-genre. While it took the top-down view from Rally X and angled things slightly, various copycats were spawned. Think World Rally, ATR: All Terrain Racing, and many others.

While I first encountered Super Sprint in its original arcade form, the one I played the most was the C64 port of the sequel, Championship Sprint. This game included a track editor, enabling you to create fiendish routes to bamboozle your opponents. And as a rare multiplayer title for the C64, it was a favourite.

So, I’m pretty interested in NeoSprint; it will be interesting to see how this overhaul of Super Sprint turns out.

If you’re interested in NeoSprint, you can pre-order now on Xbox Series, Steam, and PlayStation 5, and it is already available to play on Atari VCS. A Nintendo Switch version should be available to pre-order soon.
