Now this looks fun. Kudzu is a new RPG coming out on Game Boy and Switch with a physical edition on the older device.

Kudzu has been created in GB Studio and challenges you to explore the depths of a sinister maze.

Developed by Pie For Breakfast Studios and published through 8-Bit Legit, Kudzu offers 6-7 hours of gameplay. Apparently, the game was inspired by a school project. Developer Chris Totten of Pie For Breakfast Studios conceived the game after recalling a college architecture school project where he and his classmates proposed building their projects in a field of what they thought was ivy, which turned out to be invasive kudzu plants!

Last year 8-Bit Legit’s earlier Roniu’s Tale enjoyed a physical NES cartridge release. This year, Kudzu is being produced in physical format thanks to a Kickstarter campaign. We love to see it!

  • Authentic retro experience with 8-Bit Legit graphics loyal to the cartridge-gaming era

Here’s the Kudzu blurb

Who dares to explore the depths of the Kudzu maze: is it just an out-of-control invasive plant, or is something more sinister afoot?

Take control of Max, a serious go-getter and the best student of master gardener Zoen, who has just gone missing in the kudzu labyrinth. The wisdom that Zoen imparted on Max will be put to the test as you use your wits and gardening tools – machete, rake, garden hoe, and others – to navigate the vines!

During your journey, you will find a host of weird and helpful characters, as well as kudzu-controlled creatures who will stalk you through fields, gardens, forests, and even a haunted house!

Will you survive long enough to find Zoen and unravel the mysterious origins of the kudzu itself?

While the game was put together in GB Studio, artwork was done in Aseprite pixel art editor, while the maps were assembled in the Tiled level editor. Essentially, Kudzu is a homebrew hobby project and the work of practiced game developers.

You can pre-order Kudzu for Nintendo Switch and pre-order the Game Boy cartridge on Kickstarter. Learn everything you need to know about Kudzu on the 8-Bit Legit website.
