NeoGeo Consolizer, Orthros MCS-01 Available To Back On Kickstarter

Last Updated on March 15, 2023

The NeoGeo MVS was a coin-operated arcade machine with a library of games that came on large cartridges. These were a hit in the arcade scene thanks to their ease of use, as all it took to change an arcade machine into something completely different was a new cartridge and decoration.

A ‘Supergun’ allows you to play these arcade games without the full arcade cabinet (think interfaces for cables, the display, etc.), and that’s what this NeoGeo Consolizer does. The Orthros MCS-01 lets you play NeoGeo games from original MVS cartridges at home, and offers plenty of ‘ease of use’ trimmings like an HDMI port and accessible dip switches.

With how chunky MVC cartridges are, the hardware looks exceptionally sleek and like a brand-new console in its own right. The unit on the Kickstarter campaign page even has a slick red under glow.

It’s important to mention that the MVS slot (the receiver the cartridges plug into) is something you’ll have to provide yourself, and they must be a specific model to boot. Generally speaking, you can grab a working MVS slot on eBay for around £100. Meanwhile, MVS cartridges range from a few quid to three figure sums.

This unit is a great way to enjoy NeoGeo games at home, but it’s not a console. A home version of the NeoGeo already exists, the NeoGeo AES.

I’ll let your jaw hit the floor at the prices of games for that one!

At the time of writing, the Orthros MCS-01 is very close to its funding goal, with £32,017 of the £44,206 already pledged. The project has 21 days remaining to reach its target, so it’s well on its way to a successful campaign. If you’re interested in backing the project yourself or want to see an in-depth dive into the technology, check out the Kickstarter page.
