Kickstarter for HarleQuest! on Dreamcast & PC Is Now Live

Last Updated on April 13, 2023

Back in February, we reported that Ross Kilgariff, the solo Developer of HarleQuest!, was planning a Kickstarter campaign to fund his project.

The Kickstarter campaign is now live, and with 18 days to go, I’m happy to report it’s tantalizingly close to reaching its funding goal. At the time of writing, $13,560 out of the $13,986 target has been pledged. This is an ‘all or nothing’ campaign, so the project will not go ahead without the target being reached, but unless something disastrous happens, HarleQuest‘s development is going ahead.

Update: HarleQuest has just reached its target on Kickstarter, and the campaign is a success, with over two weeks still to go. There are several stretch goals if pledges continue to be made, with a digital version for the Nintendo Switch being next if the project reaches $18,000.

Ross has created an FAQ page on Kickstarter which gives us a few glimpses of what to expect from the full game. As HarleQuest! is a RogueLike, the goal is for players to learn from their mistakes and improve through failing. When asked about an easy mode, Ross had this to say:

“Instead of adding an easy mode, our goal is to gradually teach the player to become more and more skilled at the game, and to make the process of mastery fun in itself. Anyone with some prior experience gaming should be able to pick up the controls and learn the game’s systems without getting too stuck.”

As for game length, each playthrough of HarleQuest is planned to have 5-7 areas. Those areas are procedurally generated, so the experience will differ each time you play.

The part I’m most excited about is the Dreamcast VMU (Visual Memory Unit) integration. Nothing specific has been revealed, but some functionality is planned along with the Vibration Pack.
