Wii SPii: Portable Nintendo Wii Built Into a Game Boy Advance SP Case
Nintendo modding is the secret society you really wish you were part of. Want proof? Take a look at this portable Nintendo Wii system, the Wii SPii, which has been squeezed into a Game Boy Advance SP form factor.
In a project begun by BitBuilt forum mod StonedEdge back in April 2020, the Wii SPii is capable of playing Wii, Gamecube, and Nintendo 64 games. Built around a dedicated PCB designed for playing Wii-compatible titles and running the BBLoader software, the Wii SPii loads games from a microSD card, features dual 8 ohm speakers, and charges via USB-C. There is an LED battery indicator, and games play on a 3.5-inch 480p VGA LCD display.
A handheld piece of magic, the Wii SPii is custom made in almost every physical detail, from the use of analogue trigger buttons to its CNC machined case and resin buttons. Watch the full video above for an explanation of the build and a demo.
Truly, this is an impressive piece of DIY. The only thing wrong with it is that it’s just one device, for one guy. There is no mass or even limited production run here, so unless you have the skills to replicate this portable Nintendo Wii, there is no chance that you’ll ever own one.
