Nintendo: No Zelda Remakes of Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker

Last Updated on July 14, 2023

Nintendo has stated that Zelda remakes of classic titles from the series are doubtful.

Whilst there are always high hopes for more remakes from Nintendo’s 37-year old fantasy epic line up, actual remasters and remakes are relatively rare, especially 1998’s Ocarina of Time and 2002’s Wind Waker.

Insider info has often suggested that they are being considered. However, Producer Eiji Aonuma has now made things clear. Whilst it’s true that they’ve both had rereleases within the last 15 years, the company “prefer to focus on the future” rather than on games that were “born from the ideas we had in the past.”

There’s a growing catalogue of retro games available as part of the Switch Online service and whilst this does, of course, include some items from the Zelda series, it appears they have their development eyes in other directions.

The company appears to be concentrating its efforts on more open-world adventures such as its 2023 release Tears of the Kingdom, which was the fastest-selling game in the franchise’s history. Aonuma said, “We always try to make something that offers more than previous productions. In that respect, we are not really concerned with our old games anymore.”

So, no Zelda remakes or remasters.
