Solo developer Ross Kilgariff is creating an ambitious Roguelike Dungeon Crawler for the Dreamcast and Steam. The Kickstarter for the project is starting in April 2023.

In a Vlog on his YouTube Channel, Ross explains how the HarleQuest! came to be, and some of his plans for the gameplay.

Ross describes HarleQuest! as a “High-Difficulty, procedurally generated dungeon crawler” and notes, “Realistically, the player is going to die over and over again”. This is typical of the Roguelike/Soulslike genre, and Ross explains that gameplay takes inspiration from a few titles, including The Binding Of Isaac.

Ed Mcmillen’s ‘The Binding Of Isaac’ is one of the most well-known and critically acclaimed games in the Roguelite space.

Stylistically, HarleQuest! takes cues from 90’s adventure games, including Medieval and Spyro the Dragon.

If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, the goal is for HarleQuest! to have digital and physical releases on the Sega Dreamcast. HarleQuest will also be available on Steam.

Although the Dreamcast failed to meet Sega’s sales expectations, it’s still a beloved console, and it’s great to see software being created for it in 2023.

The Kickstarter goes live in April, and if you want to be notified when it launches, you can register on the Kickstarter page here.
