Arcade Archives Adds Rezon, Okayish R-Type Clone

The latest addition to the Arcade Archives is the largely-forgotton Rezon, a game that can be honestly described as a below-par R-Type clone.

But why re-release it? We’ll let publisher Hamster explain:

The “Arcade Archives” series has faithfully reproduced many classic Arcade masterpieces.
Players can change various game settings such as game difficulty, and also reproduce the atmosphere of arcade display settings at that time. Players can also compete against each other from all over the world with their high scores. Please enjoy the masterpiece that built a generation for video games.

Fair enough, it doesn’t tell us much. My own suspicion is they wanted R-Type or some similar arcade shooter added to the library, and Rezon was the best option available.

Rezon isn’t a bad game, it’s just not as good as R-Type, despite the heavy resemblance that extends to level design and wave attacks. Let’s be honest, R-Type is a bona fide classic, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But Rezon is not exactly Oasis when compared to the Beatles… more like the Rutles, without the laughs and cameos.

“REZON” is a shooter released by ALLUMER in 1991.
Set on Earth during an extraterrestrial invasion, players take control of an SR-91 fighter ship equipped with a VAWS (Variable Armor & Weapon System) and take on the invaders.
Pick up items and equip Arms, a key feature that gives you the ability to attack behind you or block enemy shots when used well.

For one or two players, Rezon has been re-released for Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation 4, and will set you back £6.29 ($7.99) on the Nintendo eShop or just £5.29 on the PlayStation Store.
