What the Heck Is Going on With the Intellivision Amico?

Last Updated on June 3, 2023

Have you ever wondered about the latest state of progress with the Intellivision Amico? Things seem to have gone a bit quiet with this new console as of late, leaving many people feeling in the dark about the current state of affairs. But what’s happened with the Intellivision Amico, and can we still expect good things from the project?

What is the Intellivision Amico?

Before we go any further, it’s first worth a quick reminder of what the Intellivision Amico is hoped to be – because it feels like a lifetime since we’ve heard any news! The Intellivision Amico is hoped to offer a new form of gaming with a novel console concept design that makes gaming with loved ones easier than ever. In fact, the primary premise around the Intellivision Amico is that it aims to bring back those nostalgic childhood memories of playing video games as a family

Unfortunately, while the Intellivision Amico had a big hype when it was first announced in 2020, things have gone eerily quiet since then. Of course, this has to beg the question – where has the Amico gone, and why does everything seem to be so slow with it?

When was the Intellivision Amico planned for release?

The Intellivision Amico was originally intended for release around October 2020, which caused a great deal of excitement for customers who have put their investment behind the Intellivision Amico project. However, as the month came and went, it became apparent that Amico wasn’t quite going to plan, and as we approach the two year late mark now, it seems clear that the Intellivision Amico isn’t going to be welcomed into our homes any time soon.

Delays in production

Delays in production have undeniably been one of the biggest contributors to the overall challenges suffered by the Intellivision Amico since its creation. Indeed, the Amico has faced several significant delays, and with each new extension, the community’s hope for the product has only begun to dwindle.

Indeed, after the original trademark extension request in May 2020, Intellivision has further aimed to extend the deadline, extending the trademark three more times – making a total of four extensions. If that wasn’t enough, Intellivision even attempted to further delay the project with a fifth extension request, but this has since fallen through, and the original trademark expired. Fortunately for fans still looking out for updates on the Amico, Intellivision has applied for an entirely new trademark instead, but it still remains unclear as to whether they’ll deliver on time before this one also expires.

Financial difficulties

Another significant issue that may have influenced the Intellivision Amico’s poor overall performance could be the team’s financial difficulties. Indeed, reports suggest that Intellivision has been struggling financially for years now, and with this in mind, it certainly draws into question whether the brand has suitable funding to complete the project. This is further compounded by the fact that its original fundraising goal of $5 million barely touched the surface and was canceled early.

Some doubts regarding feasibility

It’s not only financial woes and trademark deadlines that seem to be raising more questions than answers for the Intellivision Amico. In fact, many customers are asking whether there’s even likely to be a significant place for the Amico in the modern gaming market, considering so many other consoles, such as the Nintendo Switch, already seem to be targeting a similar niche and demographic.

With this in mind, it’s important to ask whether the Intellivision Amico is likely to be successful, even if it ever reaches its full release date.

Hopefully, it will be – but we won’t know for sure until the time comes. And, if the underwhelming E3 2021 demonstration was anything to go by, it’s understandable that gaming enthusiasts are often sitting on the fence and waiting for further development.

Looking to the future

Looking to the future, it may be a little unclear what the future holds for the Intellivision Amico. However, since Intellivision has now renewed the trademark that was lost, it seems likely that the project is still very much underway; therefore, fans can hopefully continue to look out for the console in the near future, even if the original release date of October 2020 has long been blown out of the water.
