Prototype Duke Nukem 4Ever Sidescrolling Version Dumped Online

Last Updated on December 30, 2022

Duke Nukem 3D is one of the seminal first person shooters of the 1990s. It’s arguable that its success made a follow-up very difficult, hence the muted response to its eventual sequel in 2011, Duke Nukem Forever.

But before Duke Nukem Forever there was Duke Nukem 4Ever, a game intended as an immediate sequel but cancelled by developers 3D Realms in favour of various expansion packs. A 2D side-scroller (but a different game to Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project), Duke Nukem 4Ever (as it is referred to in order to distinguish it from the 2011 game) has long been thought lost.

However, if the past few years of retro gaming has taught us anything, it is that nothing is truly lost. Duke Nukem 4Ever has been uploaded to the internet by x0r_jmp.

You can download the dump of Duke Nukem 4Ever and play it on the built-in DOSBox staging environment. The dump includes four development builds, including tools, so there is something for everyone there.

Let’s rock!
