Super Star Trek Has Been Ported To Multiple 8-Bit Systems

Last Updated on June 15, 2023

Reto systems developer Electron.Greg has released Super Star Trek for several 8-bit systems, including the C64 and VIC-20.

On his Itch.io page for the Acorn Electron version, he says,

have taken the original 1970s source code of the 80 column printer terminal based simulation and converted it to run on a Commodore 64  …No mainframe required!

“I have taken the original 1970s source code of the 80 column printer terminal based simulation and converted it for the Acorn Electron, running in 100% text mode (40 column MODE 6) …No mainframe required!

“Whilst undertaking this conversion I have added numerous subtle enhancements, including “helpers” for navigation & photon torpedo targeting and long range scanner interpretation guide. I’ve re-engineered and refined many stats, charts & data outputs. I’ve also added some user-friendly features and extra summary data readouts. All whilst keeping to the exact gameplay experience of the original.”

Super Star Trek is a text-based strategy game based on the TV series and was released for the Data General Nova in the 1970s. This title came off the heels of another title simply called Star Trek, initially programmed for the Sigma 7. Super Star Trek was made by Bob Leedom, who made several enhancements to the original, including changing the user interface and introducing moving Klingon ships.

Although gaming was in its infancy in the ’70s, the text-based game was very popular for the time, and many look back on it fondly.

Thanks to Electron.Greg, the game is now available on the following platforms:

  • Acorn Electron
  • BBC Micro 32K
  • Commodore 64
  • CBM PET
  • Commodore Plus/4
  • VIC-20

Be sure to check out Electron.Greg’s Itch.io page for all the different versions of Super Star Trek. There are download links for each version, along with installation instructions. He also details how specific conversions were made and has provided screenshots for each port.
