Wolfenstein 3D – 30th Anniversary Edition Released

Wolfenstein 3D is 30 years old this month. On May 5th, 1992, the first shareware version of the game was released, followed a little later by the full Wolfenstein 3D, a first-person shooter developed by id Software and a precursor to Doom.

To commemorate the release of Wolfenstein 3D, a modder on ModDB has released an “unofficial 30th anniversary edition” that has taken seven years’ work.

And it’s completely free.

On this day (May 05) 30 years ago, the first shareware version of Wolfenstein was released. To celebrate this event, an unofficial 30th anniversary edition finally sees the daylight after almost 7 years of hard work on both DOS and SDL systems, expanding the original game with yet another brand new trilogy, with 3 episodes, consisting of 10 levels each, bringing additional new features you haven’t seen in the original game before including improvements and enhancements, it’s all fun and great, but now totally in your face additions so you’ll still get the original experience! Both DOS and SDL releases were done with care and playtested just enough times, so everyone will get the best experience possible!

For my part, I wasn’t aware of Wolfenstein 3D until I saw a magazine review of Return to Castle Wolfenstein (my personal favourite in the series) back in 2001. Having since played the original (in id Software terms, at least), Wolfenstein 3D is a fun shooter that is surprisingly tricky in places. No doubt this 30th anniversary edition it just as challenging as the 1992 game.
