Project EGG on Nintendo Switch Means Old Japanese Games Are Coming

Last Updated on March 25, 2023

D4 Enterprise is bringing the Engrossing Games Gallery – or Project EGG – to Nintendo Switch, just as it has done previously on Windows and Nintendo Wii.

Wind the clock back a decade or so and D4 Enterprise was working with Nintendo to bring old MSX and Neo Geo games to the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS virtual console. Among these titles were Metal Slug and Fatal Fury, but this time around we can hope for those games and many others. Project EGG has expanded over the years and now also delivers PC-9801 and PC-8801 games.

This news brings some interesting possibilities beyond Metal Slug. As you probably know, the Neo Geo in particular is barely known in the UK and Europe, despite having a collection of superb games. Super Sidekicks 3, Spinmaster, Pulstar, and The Last Blade are just a few highlights from a surprisingly modest library.

Nevertheless, they would all be very at home on the Nintendo Switch. If Project EGG is coming, let’s hope for some top Neo Geo titles. On the Nintendo Wii, 54 Neo Geo titles were released, while just six MSX games (Metal Gear Life Force, Contra, Quarth, Road Fighter, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake) appeared on the virtual console.

It seems there is a good opportunity to bolster the Nintendo Switch’s retro gaming collection with Project EGG. We’ll let you know when there is news on release dates.
