New Amiga Wonder Boy Port Made in Scorpion Engine

Last Updated on November 26, 2022

Considering its niche appeal, game creation for the Amiga is alive and well in 2022. Some of this popularity can be attributed to the successful launch of the A500 Mini back in March, as this tidy little machine sold almost 200,000 units within the first hour of trading!

Multiple tools to make Amiga games have existed for a while now, but the Scorpion Engine is the new kid on the block, and it’s making some serious waves.

One of the latest and greatest games to be created with this engine is Wonder Boy, a superb port of SEGA’s 1986 arcade platformer. This title by Acidbottle started off as part of a submission to AmiGameJam 2022 and has now evolved into a fully-fledged release.

Acidbottle intends to add more to this game in the future, but as of now, it’s fully playable and is in its 1.0 state.

The Wonder Boy purists amongst you will notice several subtle differences between this and the arcade version, but it’s as faithful as possible. Acidbottle noted explicitly that trampolines and frogs were particularly taxing to get right but are in a decent state.

If you want to try Wonder Boy out for yourself, you can download it from this itch.io page. Just note that you’ll need either an Amiga or an emulator to run it. WinUAE is arguably the best choice of emulator, but you will need to source the appropriate ROM files yourself.
