Commodore 64 Magazine FREEZE64 Issue 59 Now Available

Last Updated on April 1, 2023

Fans of the Commodore 64 should not miss any edition of FREEZE64, but if this magazine is new to you, let this be the perfect jumping in point.

Overseen by Vincenzo (Vinny) Mainolfi, FREEZE64 reaches over 500 readers worldwide and has been running for around 7 years.

Here’s how issue 59 was announced…

In issue 59 of FREEZE64 you will find:

COVER FEATURE: MUDDY RACERS
Over the years, us fortunate Commodore 64 gamers have been treated to a plethora of overhead/top-down single screen racers such as Badlands, Carnage, Grand Prix Simulator, and of course, the fab Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart’s Super Off Road – the latter scoring a respectable 85% in ZZAP!64 issue 66. But since the demise of the commercial C64 market, there really hasn’t been a top-down racer worthy of our attention… that is, until now… We get our joysticks wet and dirty playing and chatting about Monte Boyd’s fabulous new Commodore 64 top-down game, MUDDY RACERS.

JULIAN RIGNALL’S ZZAPBACK!
Julian reaches the end of his time with ZZAP!64 magazine, and so we share his final ZZAPBACK where he revisits The Great Giana Sisters, Bionic Commando, International Soccer, and Skate Crazy.

SECRET SQUIRREL INVESTIGATES
Our fluffy friend has two very different styles of hidden text to share with you; one for Mastertronic’s City Fighter, and the other for Alternative’s Slug.

DEVELOPERS’ DEN: ANDREW TROTT
Starting off producing games on the Commodore PET for Supersoft, Andrew Trott progressed on to the VIC-20, and then our beloved Commodore 64, producing such delights as STIX, QUINX and XERONS. We look back at Andrew’s time producing games for Commodore’s commercial market.

THE DISCOVERY & RECOVERY OF LORDSFIRE
Back in December 2022, Frank Gasking, via his GTW64.co.uk website, released the recently discovered C64 game Lordsfire, which had previously been hidden away in a dusty box for around 38 years! We share Frank’s discovery and the recovery of Jeremy Walker’s long-lost game.

OUT OF THE ‘MOULDY CUPBOARD’
Hands up who remembers The Thompson Twins? No – not the Tintin characters, but the UK pop band from the early to mid-eighties. Well – did you know that they had a Commodore 64 game called TREAD BEAR? We recently rediscovered it in The Mouldy Cupboard and couldn’t resist loading it up once again… Was it worth it? You’re about to find out!

DIARY OF A GAME – TRAN BY STEVE COLLINS
Part 13 of the making of Steve Collins’ unreleased game, TRAN. We’re almost coming to the end of Steve’s diary, with only a couple more instalments left to share with you all. It’s a corker!

FREEZE64 costs just £6.50 in the UK and £7.99 for the rest of the world. Both prices include package and posting.
